Focusing on Health Literacy

MDwise believes it is important for our members to have a good understanding of health literacy. Health literacy is defined as, “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.” A lack of health literacy can affect your overall health and wellness.

Having a better understanding of health literacy helps members self-manage their health. This helps members use health care services more efficiently, lower costs and experience higher satisfaction. Below are some things you can do to help improve your health literacy.

  • Have a plan for every provider visit.
  • Ask questions if anything is unclear.
  • Request information in plain language.
  • Bring a friend or family member to your visit if possible.
  • Seek advice from experts.
  • Look for multilingual providers, if needed.
  • Use technology to your benefit.
  • Take advantage of health education opportunities.
  • Provide feedback.
