Feelings of sadness or a loss of interest is a mood disorder called Depression. People often say you can “snap out of it”, but it is not that easy. The good news: medication, talk therapy or both can help you feel better.
In 2023, a national survey said nearly three in 10 adults have depression. The symptoms are different for everyone and are mild to severe. Depression can cause problems in the things you do each day, your relationships or have you feeling unhappy.
A few symptoms are:
- Feeling sad or hopeless.
- Loss or reduced interest in things you enjoy.
- Change in the way you eat leading to weight gain or loss.
- Sleeping too much or not enough.
- Low energy levels or feeling tired.
- Feeling worthless.
- Trouble thinking, focusing, making small decisions and remembering things.
- Suicidal thoughts or attempts – if you feel that you want to hurt yourself or make a suicide attempt, call the crisis helpline and dial 988, they are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Depression can start at any age. There is no sure way to prevent depression, but here a few things you can do that may help:
- Find ways to control stress.
- Medication.
- Talk therapy.
